When it comes to sculptural depiction of native American culture, artist Susan Kliewer is truly one of the best. She lived for five years at the remote Marble Canyon Trading Post, a site on the Colorado River that marks the western boundary of the Navajo Nation. She later spent ten years perfecting her craft at an art casting foundry in Sedona, Arizona. Her sculptures are reflections of her experiences on the reservation, and they are beautifully rendered and accurate in detail, highly valued, and widely collected.
In 1993 Susan won an open competition to create, for the City of Sedona, a monument honoring Sedona Schnebly, the pioneer for whom the city was named. In 1994 the one and one-half size figurative bronze sculpture was dedicated at the entrance to the Sedona Public Library.
