Mark Rossi’s roots in Western Art run deep. He reflects the heritage of his mother’s Apache, Pueblo, and Spanish New Mexican respect for the flora and fauna of the desert southwest, as well as those of his prominent Western artist father and former Gilcrease Museum of Art Director, Paul Rossi. From an early age, Mark developed the observational skills that are so obvious in his work.
Mark’s meticulously researched and historically accurate sculpture of Tohono O’Odham basket weaver Juanita Ahil graces the entrance to Tucson’s Mo Udall Park. Dedicated in 1988, the life size bronze depicts a standing Juanita holding one of her creations, a basket of the “Man in the Maze” design. The sculpture is replete with O’Odham symbolism, from the image woven into the basket, to the objects that are at Juanita’s feet, to the maze on which the sculpture stands.
