Padre Eusebio Francisco Kino, S.J., (1645-1711), a celebrated Jesuit missionary to Northern Mexico and Southern Arizona, is still revered to this day. In the mid-1980’s, Julian Martinez, a Mexican sculptor famous for monumental works in bronze, collaborated with a committee from Tucson on a project known as the “Three Statues for Three Centuries”, to produce three identical monumental equestrian sculptures of Kino. Desert Crucible, Inc. participated in the project by casting smaller renditions of the sculpture, known as “maquettes”, which were sold to raise the funds for the project. The monuments are located in Segno, Trentino, Italy, Kino’s birthplace, in Tucson, a site of Kino’s mission territory, and in Magdalena, Sonora, Mexico the site of his death and burial.
