There was no artist better prepared to sculpt the subject “Chief Trumpeter”, located in Tucson’s Fort Lowell Park, than Southern Arizona native Dan Bates. He has been an ardent student of southwestern history most of his life, often focusing on the 1800’s, the era of the US Cavalry’s struggles with the indigenous Apache tribes. His depictions of that era set a standard for meticulous attention to accurate historical detail.
