Buck McCain has a unique background – from being a 5th generation cattle rancher, to training in classical art in Europe. His life experiences have earned him a prominent position as an artist of the American southwest. His work has been described as both powerful and elegant, and can be found in numerous museums and corporate collections across the country.
In the 18th century the area called the Pimeria Alta, which encompassed parts of what are now southern Arizona and northern Sonora, was claimed as a colony by Spain. In the late 1700’s, in the tiny pueblo of Tucson, Spanish soldiers built the presidio (fortified military location) known as Fort San Agustín del Tucsón. Tucson thus became a Spanish garrison manned by Spanish soldiers. “El Soldado de Cuera”, a historically accurate McCain depiction of one of these soldiers, was commissioned by the City of Tucson and stands in Presidio Park.
